How it Began

It began, as these things often do, with a cancelled flight and a wall of excuses.

When a British Columbia lawyer experienced a 105-hour delay—you read that right, over five days!—the experience revealed something deeply troubling about air travel in Canada. Despite clear passenger-rights regulations, the airline offered no straightforward path to compensation and no meaningful accountability. The process was designed to exhaust, not empower.

That ordeal exposed how difficult it is—even for someone trained in the law—to get justice when airlines stonewall passengers and regulators lack teeth. And if it’s that hard for a lawyer, what chance does the average traveller have?

That question gave rise to SkyGuard Legal: a federally incorporated, not-for-profit advocacy organization dedicated to empowering Canadian air passengers through legal advocacy, education, and technology.
